He began his career writing for ''The'' ''Village Voice'' before becoming editor-in-chief of pop artist Andy Warhol's ''Interview'' magazine from 1971 to 1983. As part of Warhol's entourage, they collaborated on the books ''The Philosophy of Andy Warhol'' (1975) and ''Exposures'' (1979).
