. A native Oregonian, he served during
World War II

collecting art stolen by the

s for which he was awarded the
Meritorious Service Medal
and other accolades. He later served as the first dean of the
College of Liberal Arts
at
Oregon State University
and worked for the
Portland Art Museum
.
