Description
Summary:This exhibition brings together works of art that grapple with the central themes and ideas in Walt Whitman's (American, 1819-1892) epic poem, "Song of Myself." Its centerpiece is Whitman, Alabama, a project filmmaker Jennifer Crandall embarked upon with a deceptively straightforward query in mind: Who is America? She has spent the past several years crisscrossing the state of Alabama, seeking out strangers from all walks of life--a judge, high school students, football players, incarcerated people, a pilot mid-flight, a grandmother and granddaughter--and asking for permission to film their ordinary moments. The follow-up request from Crandall was more challenging: whether she might record them leading their lives while they simultaneously read aloud part of Whitman's "Song of Myself."
