Description
Summary:"Starting in the 1970s, Fred and Anne Vogel assembled an extraordinary collection of furniture and decorative arts of the types made and used in early British North America, focusing with scholarly acumen on the first century of settlement. From that large collection, they carefully selected important examples of early furniture and a rare waxwork sconce to present to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. That gift is documented in the extensive catalogue entries in this richly illustrated volume prepared by a team of curators, conservators, and specialists. The Vogel gift encompasses furniture from New England, New York, and Pennsylvania. It represents many of the major shop traditions and regional expressions of the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, ranging from Boston, New York, and Philadelphia, to the more rural styles of the Connecticut shore and the Connecticut River Valley. Each object, including seating furniture, case pieces, and tables, is described in detail and placed in its art historical and cultural context. The result is a rich look at the artistic traditions of colonial America that will be of interest to every collector, dealer, curator, and student of early American art and material culture"--Cover verso.
